Publication Metadata only 5-Methylhydantoin: From isolated molecules in a low-temperature Aaon matrix to solid state polymorphs characterization(2017-12) Nogueira, Bernardo.A.; Canotilho J.; Eusébio MES; Henriques MSC; Paixão JA; Fausto R.; ILDIZ, GÜLCE ÖĞRÜÇThe molecular structure, vibrational spectra and photochemistry of 5-methylhydantoin (C4H6N2O2; 5-MH) were studied by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) theory level. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis approach was used to study in detail the electronic structure of the minimum energy structure of 5-MH, namely the specific characteristics of the σ and π electronic systems of the molecule and the stabilizing orbital interactions. UV irradiation of 5-MH isolated in argon matrix resulted in its photofragmentation through a single photochemical pathway, yielding isocyanic acid, ethanimine, and carbon monoxide, thus following a pattern already observed before for the parent hydantoin and 1-methylhydantoin molecules. The investigation of the thermal properties of 5-MH was undertaken by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light thermal microscopy (PLTM) and Raman spectroscopy. Four different polymorphs of 5-MH were identified. The crystal structure of one of the polymorphs, for which it was possible to grow up suitable crystals, was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Two of the additional polymorphs were characterized by powder XRD, which confirmed the molecules pack in different crystallographic arrangements.Publication Metadata only A comparison of Gordon's functional health patterns model and standard nursing care in symptomatic heart failure patients: A randomized controlled trial(W.B. Saunders, 2020-06) Türen, Sevda; Enç, NurayBackground Heart failure (HF) is associated with poor quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Aim This study aimed to investigate effect of application of Gordon's functional health pattern (FHP) model in nursing care of symptomatic HF patients on quality of life, morbidity and mortality in the post-discharge 30-day. Methods This is a prospective randomized controlled study conducted in a single center. Experimental group received nursing care planned in accordance with Gordon's FHP model. 60 control and 60 experimental HF patients were included in the study. In the control group nursing care was given according to the standard protocol of the hospital whereas in the experimental group nursing care was given in accordance with Gordon's FHP model. Patients in both groups were followed up after discharge at 30th day. Results Mean Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire score improved significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group at 30th day (40.2 ± 23.5 vs 62.3 ± 22.9 respectively, p = 0.001). Seven patients (11.7%) in the experimental group and 17 patients (28.3%) in the control group were readmitted in the post discharge 30-day (p = 0.02). Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis revealed significant difference in 30-day event free survival rates between groups (log-rank p = 0.31). Conclusion Application of Gordon's FHP model in the nursing care of HF patients was associated with significantly improved quality of life, and reduced hospital readmission rates at 30th day. This was the only independent predictor of 30-day event free survival.Publication Open Access Analysis of Facial Emotion Expression in Eating Occasions Using Deep Learning(Springer, 2023) ELİF, YILDIRIM; AKBULUT, FATMA PATLAR; Çatal, ÇağatayEating is experienced as an emotional social activity in any culture. There are factors that influence the emotions felt during food consumption. The emotion felt while eating has a significant impact on our lives and affects different health conditions such as obesity. In addition, investigating the emotion during food consumption is considered a multidisciplinary problem ranging from neuroscience to anatomy. In this study, we focus on evaluating the emotional experience of different participants during eating activities and aim to analyze them automatically using deep learning models. We propose a facial expression-based prediction model to eliminate user bias in questionnaire-based assessment systems and to minimize false entries to the system. We measured the neural, behavioral, and physical manifestations of emotions with a mobile app and recognize emotional experiences from facial expressions. In this research, we used three different situations to test whether there could be any factor other than the food that could affect a person’s mood. We asked users to watch videos, listen to music or do nothing while eating. This way we found out that not only food but also external factors play a role in emotional change. We employed three Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures, fine-tuned VGG16, and Deepface to recognize emotional responses during eating. The experimental results demonstrated that the fine-tuned VGG16 provides remarkable results with an overall accuracy of 77.68% for recognizing the four emotions. This system is an alternative to today’s survey-based restaurant and food evaluation systems.Publication Metadata only Analysis of linear lung models based on state-space models(Elsevier Ireland Ltd., 2020-01) Saatçi, Ertuğrul; Akan, Aydın; SAATÇI, ESRABackground and Objectives: Linear parametric respiratory system models have been used in the model-based analysis of the respiratory system. Although there are studies exploring the physiological correctness and fitting accuracy of the models, they are not analysed in terms of interaction between parameters and dynamics of the model. In this study we propose to use state-space modelling to yield the time-varying nature of the system incorporated by the parameters. Methods: We tested controllability, observability and stability characteristics of the equation of motion, 2-comp. parallel, 2-comp. series, viscoelastic, 6-element and mead models while using the parameters given in the literature. In the sensitivity analysis we proposed to use dual Desensitized Linear Kalman Filter (DKF) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method. In this method, state error covariance revealed the parameter sensitivities for each model. Results: Results showed that all models, except 2-comp. parallel and mead models, are both controllable and observable models. On the other hand all models, except mead model, are stable models. Regarding to the sensitivity analysis, dual DKF - EKF method estimated states of the models successfully with a low estimation error. Sensitivity analysis results showed that airway parameters have higher effects on the state estimation than the other parameters have. Conclusion: We proved that state-space evaluation of the previously proposed parametric models of the respiratory system led us to quantitative and qualitative assessments of the respiratory models. Atiprimod, a novel compound belonging to the azaspirane class of cationic amphiphilic drugs, has antiproliferative, anticarcinogenic effects in multiple myeloma, breast, and hepatocellular carcinoma by blocking STAT3 activation. Therapeutic agents' efficiency depends on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-autophagy regulation during drug-mediated apoptotic cell death decision. However, the molecular machinery of dose-dependent atiprimod treatment regarding ER stress-autophagy has not been investigated yet. Thus, our aim is to investigate the ER stress-autophagy axis in atiprimod-mediated apoptotic cell death in GH-secreting rat cell line (GH3) pituitary adenoma cells. Dose-dependent atiprimod treatment decreased GH3 cell viability, inhibited cell growth, and colony formation. Upregulation of Atg5, Atg12, Beclin-1 expressions, cleavage of LC-3II and formation of autophagy vacuoles were determined only after 1 mu M atiprimod exposure. In addition, atiprimod-triggered ER stress was evaluated by BiP, C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP), p-PERK upregulation, and Ca+2 release after 1 mu M atiprimod exposure. Concomitantly, increasing concentration of atiprimod induced caspase-dependent apoptotic cell death via modulating Bcl(2) family members. Moreover, by N-acetyl cycteinc pretreatment, atiprimod triggered reactive oxygen species generation and prevented apoptotic induction. Concomitantly, dose-dependent atiprimod treatment decreased both GH and STAT3 expression in GH3 cells. In addition, overexpression of STAT3 increased atiprimod-mediated cell viability loss and apoptotic cell death through suppressing autophagy and ER stress key molecules expression profile. In conclusion, a low dose of atiprimod exposure triggers autophagy and mild-ER stress as a survival mechanism, but increased atiprimod dose induced caspase-dependent apoptotic cell death by targeting STAT3 in GH3 pituitary adenoma cells.Publication Metadata only Awareness of health sciences students about colorectal cancer risk factors(2019-05) Üstündağ, Hülya; Zengin, Neriman; Andsoy, Işıl Işık; GÜL, ASİYEObjective This descriptive study was conducted in order to determine the risk factors, symptoms and awareness of health sciences students with regards to colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods This study included 1,028 health science students from two different universities. Data for this study were collected via a questionnaire form that included questions about CRC risk factors, protective approaches and symptoms. Frequencies, percentages and averages of the data were assessed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results The most frequent risk factors of the students (mean age: 21.25 years) were smoking (90.5%), excessive alcohol consumption (87.4%), family history of cancer (84.2%) and obesity (82.6%), while the most common protective approaches were smoking cessation, avoiding alcohol, regular physical activity and a low-fat diet. There was a significant difference in the CRC awareness of students in terms of gender, the department and grade level at which they were studying, and having a family history of cancer. Conclusion Results of this study revealed that students had a sufficient awareness about risk factors and what they could do to diminish their risk, but their knowledge about CRC symptoms was less than expected. The resulting low temperature IR spectra of the vacuum-isolated microsolvates in the OH stretching range are assigned based on harmonic DFT predictions for closed shell solvent dimers and trimers and their offset from experiment, to minimise theory-guided assignment bias. Systematic conformational preferences for the first and second solvent molecule are observed, depending on the conformational rigidity of the radical. These assignments are collected into an experimental benchmark data set and used to assess the spectral predicting power of different DFT approaches. This dataset contains biosignals, facial expressions, and speech signals, making it an invaluable resource for stress analysis and related studies. The ecological validity of the dataset was ensured by the fact that the data were collected in actual workplace environments. The biosignal data contains measurements of electrodermal activity, blood volume pressure, and cutaneous temperature, among others. High-resolution video recordings were used to capture facial expressions, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of facial cues associated with tension. In order to capture vocal characteristics indicative of tension, speech signals were recorded. The dataset contains samples from both stress-free and stressful work situations, providing a proportionate representation of various stress levels. The dataset is accompanied by extensive metadata and annotations, which facilitate in-depth analysis and interpretation. WorkStress3D is a valuable resource for developing and evaluating stress detection models, examining the impact of work environments on stress levels, and exploring the potential of multimodal data fusion for stress analysis.Publication Metadata only Brain oscillations in neuropsychiatric disease(2013-09) BAŞAR, EROLThe term “brain (or neural) oscillations” refers to the rhythmic and/or repetitive electrical activity generated spontaneously and in response to stimuli by neural tissue in the central nervous system. The importance of brain oscillations in sensory-cognitive processes has become increasingly evident. It has also become clear that event-related oscillations are modified in many types of neuropathology, in particular in cognitive impairment. This review discusses methods such as evoked/event-related oscillations and spectra, coherence analysis, and phase locking. It gives examples of applications of essential methods and concepts in bipolar disorder that provide a basis for fundamental notions regarding neurophysiologic biomarkers in cognitive impairment. The take-home message is that in the development of diagnostic and pharmacotherapeutic strategies, neurophysiologic data should be analyzed in a framework that uses a multiplicity of methods and frequency bands.Publication Metadata only Brain's Alpha, Beta, Gamma, delta, and theta oscillations in neuropsychiatric diseases: Proposal for biomarker strategies(2013) Başar Eroğlu, Canan; Güntekin, Bahar; Gülmen Yener, Görsev; BAŞAR, EROLBrain oscillations have gained tremendous importance in neuroscience during recent decades as functional building blocks of sensory-cognitive processes. Research also shows that event-related oscillations (EROs) in "alpha," "beta," "gamma," "delta," and "theta" frequency windows are highly modified in pathological brains, especially in patients with cognitive impairment. The strategies and methods applied in the present report reflect the innate organization of the brain: "the whole brain work." The present paper is an account of methods such as evoked/event-related spectra, evoked/ERDs, coherence analysis, and phase-locking. The report does not aim to cover all strategies related to the systems theory applied in brain research literature. However, the essential methods and concepts are applied in several examples from Alzheimer's disease (AD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder (BD), and such examples lead to fundamental statements in the search for neurophysiological biomarkers in cognitive impairment. An overview of the results clearly demonstrates that it is obligatory to apply the method of oscillations in multiple electroencephalogram frequency windows in search of functional biomarkers and to detect the effects of drug applications. Again, according to the summary of results in AD patients and BD patients, multiple oscillations and selectively distributed recordings must be analyzed and should include multiple locations. Selective connectivity between selectively distributed neural networks has to be computed by means of spatial coherence. Therefore, by designing a strategy for diagnostics, the differential diagnostics, and application of (preventive) drugs, neurophysiological information should be analyzed within a framework including multiple methods and multiple frequency bands. The application of drugs/neurotransmitters gains a new impact with the analysis of oscillations and coherences. A more clear and differentiated analysis of drug effects can be attained in comparison to the application of the conventional wide-band evoked potential and event-related potential applications.Publication Metadata only Cases of Zika virus infection in Turkey: newly married couple returning from Cuba(2018-07) Alper, Sezen; Yıldırım, M.; Kültür, MN.; Pehlivanoğlu, F.; Menemenlioğlu, D.Zika virus is a Flavivirus in the family Flaviviridae, and transmitted to humans by Aedes species mosquitoes. Zika virus infection is asymptomatic in 80% of cases and has a mild course when symptoms occur. These symptoms include headache, myalgia, mild fever, maculopapular rash and conjunctivitis. Zika virus has been associated with serious neurological complications such as Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults and microcephaly development in neonates. It has recently become a global public health problem as a result of increasing cases. As it is known that the vector of this disease is present in our country; entry of Zika virus infection in our country has a great importance. In this report the clinical and laboratory findings of two cases of Zika virus infection imported to Turkey by a couple returning from Cuba in October 2017 were presented. Newly married couple, both 29 years old, without a known chronic disease history, went on honeymoon to Cuba between 17-29 September and they visited Havana and Varadero. They reported that they were bitten repeatedly by the mosquitoes and did not use insect repellents during this time. Four days after returning to Turkey, they had headaches, back pain and myalgia followed by rash and joint pain. They reported having their symptoms started in the same day in a few hours difference. The symptoms for both patients disappeared in 10 days. Serum samples from the patients were sent to the Public Health General Directorate National Arboviruses and Viral Zoonoses Laboratory to be tested for Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses. Nucleic acid testing yielded negative results. The Arbovirus Indirect Immunofluorescence test were positive both for IgM and IgG for Zika virus. No cross reactivity with Dengue virus was detected. Chikungunya antibodies were found as negative. At two months of the diagnosis, urine and semen samples of the male patient were tested by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). The result was negative for urine but positive for semen sample. This report is important to present the first cases of Zika virus infection published in Turkey. Zika virus infection should be suspected in patients with fever, headache, rash, myalgia and joint pain returning from an endemic areas. All travelers, especially pregnant women, have to take precautions for mosquitos during the trip.Publication Metadata only Chemotherapy and radiation induced pulmonary dysfunction in hodgkin lymphoma patients(2016-12) İzmir Güner, Şebnem; Teoman Yanmaz, Mustafa; Selvi, Ahmet; Usul, ÇiğdemAlthough the deterioration in pulmonary functions is a well-known important problem due to the treatment of the Hodgkin's lymphoma patients, the immediate and long term effects of the therapy and its distinctive components were not shown clearly yet. We planned to investigate effects of multiple agent chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy to pulmonary functions immediately and thereafter and the possible effects of the managing this situation. 34 patients were included the study. The patients were evaluated for peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced expiratory vital capacity (FVC), mean total lung capacity (TLC) values, FEV1/FVC ratio, diffusing capacity for carbonmonoxide (DLco), diffusing capacity for carbonmonoxide corrected for hemoglobin concentration (DLCO) before and at 1, 6 and 12 months after the initiation of the treatment. Demographic characteristics; disease stages; chemotherapy protocols; whether radiotherapy is received; if yes, the region and the dose received were recorded. The tests were finally analysed in two separated groups; group A treated with only chemotherapy and group B; treated with combination therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In group A, FVC and FEV1 is similar before and after treatment. FEV1/FVC ratio was increased (P = 0.0001) in this group despite increasing in mean TLC values (P = 0.001). No meaningful changes were observed in PEF and DLCO values in group A. In group B, FVC, FEV1 and PEF were decreased after treatment (for FVC P = 0.028, for FEV1 P = 0.04). Despite a decrease in first month of the treatment in FEV1/FVC ratio and DLco these two parameters were recovered at the end of the first year in group B patients. TLC values were increased after treatment in group B as in group A (P = 0.035). We believe that, if these patients are managed well in 1 year; necessary precautions are provided; and patients are well-informed, then there wouldn't be too much risk and mortality rate for long-term side effects of ABVD and mediastinal RT.Publication Open Access Comparison of Kinesio Taping, Trigger Point Injection, and Neural Therapy in the Treatment of Acute Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Study(Kare Publishing, 2023) Ay, Saime; Tur, Birkan Sonel; Karakaş, Merve; Gökmen, Derya; ALTINBİLEK, TURGAY; Evcik, DenizObjectives: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a regional painful soft-tissue disorder, characterized by trigger points (TrPs) and taut bands in the muscles. In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of kinesio taping (KT), TrPs injection, and neural therapy (NT) on pain and disability in acute MPS.Methods: 104 patients with MPS in the cervical region were allocated into three groups. Group 1 (n=35) were treated with KT, Group 2 (n=35) received local anesthetic (LA) (lidocaine of 0.5%) TrPs injection, and Group 3 (n=34) received NT with the same LA solution. Patients were assessed by means of pain, pressure pain threshold (PPT), and disability. Pain severity was measured by Visual Analog Scale. The neck pain disability scale was used for assessing disability. PPT was measured by using an algometer. Measurements were taken before and after treatment of 3(rd) and 7(th) days.Results: There were improvements on pain and disability in all groups at the end of treatments at 3(rd) day and during follow-up period (p<0.001) and no differences were found between the groups. There was significant difference in PPT values in TrPs injection and NT groups in comparisons between all time periods, however, the change, depending on time in the KT group, was not statistically significant.Conclusion: The results of this study show that all these three treatment methods found to be effective on pain relief and disability in acute MPS. In terms of PPT, injection treatments seem to be superior than KT.Publication Metadata only Design and Molecular Dynamics of Multifunctional Sulfonated Poly (Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate)/Mica Hybrid Cryogels Through Freezing-Induced Gelation(ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY, THOMAS GRAHAM HOUSE, SCIENCE PARK, MILTON RD, CAMBRIDGE CB4 0WF, CAMBS, ENGLAND, 2019-09-21) Tanc, Beril; Orakdogen, Beril; BEŞLİ, NUR SENA ÖKTENThis article addresses various strategies that have been explored to design sulfonated poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)/mica hybrid-gels with optimized network parameters and mechanical/swelling properties. A series of hybrid cryogels and hydrogels containing amino and sulfonic acid groups were prepared from N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid in the presence of inorganic additive mica via a cryogelation process and conventional in situ copolymerization. Cryogelation was used to fine-tune the mechanical properties of the PDMAEMA-based hybrid gels. The effects of pH, temperature and mica content on the network parameters, mechanical properties and swelling behavior were discussed. X-ray diffractometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that mica particles had participated in (cryo)polymerization, and the thermal stability and surface morphologies were improved by the addition of mica. The profile of water loss, decomposition of amine groups and breakdown of PDMAEMA chains of the resulting hybrid gels were determined by thermogravimetric analysis. A critical mica concentration was found for the hybrid hydrogels where the degree of swelling attains a maximum value. Below 0.50% (w/v) of mica, the ionic nature of mica dominates its crosslinker effect. The hybrid cryogels were tough and able to recover at room temperature after compression testing. The prepared hybrid-gels showed an enhanced swelling response and on-off switching swelling characteristics in water and in aqueous NaCl solutions. The parameters of equilibrium swelling, the initial swelling rate, the diffusional exponent, and the diffusion coefficient were evaluated and the swelling kinetics of the hybrid hydrogels and cryogels in water followed the pseudo second order model. All the prepared hybrid hydrogel and cryogel materials with tunable mechanical stability and elasticity can be excellent candidates for designing smart materials.Publication Metadata only Does clinically measured ankle plantar flexor muscle strength or weakness correlate with walking performance in healthy individuals?(2018) Akalan, N.Ekin; Kuchimov, Shavkat Nadir; Temelli, Yener; Ören, Merve; Nene, Anand; APTİ, ADNANOBJECTIVE: Muscle strength is usually measured using isometric hand-held dynamometers (HHDs) in the clinic. However, during functional activities, the muscle acts more dynamically. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between clinically measured plantar flexor (PF) muscle strength (PFMS) and laboratory measurements of peak ankle plantar flexion power generation (APFPG), peak ankle moment (PAM), peak plantar flexion velocity (PFV) and mean gait velocity in healthy participants. METHODS: The maximum PFMS on non-dominant sides in 18 able-bodied persons 23.88 (SD 3.55 years) was measured before (Pre-S) and after a stretching (Post-S) procedure (135 sec. x 13 rep. with 5 sec. rest) by using a HHD. The stretching procedure was used to generate temporary PF muscle weakness. Gait analysis was carried out for Pre-S and Post-S conditions. Normalized (by weight and height) and non-normalized HHD scores and differences for both conditions were correlated by Pearson correlation coefficient calculations (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Reduced PFMS (%23, p < 0.001) in Post-S, according to the HHD scores, has only a weak correlation with APFPG (r > 0.3, p < 0.5). Gait velocity was found to be strongly correlated with APFPG only in the Post-S condition (r = 0.68, p < 0.002). HHD scores and PAM were moderately correlated with the non-normalized Post-S condition (r = 0.44, p = 0.70) and strongly correlated with the non-normalized Pre-S condition (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). DISCUSSION: HHD scores of plantar flexor muscles give very limited information about the PF performance during walking in healthy individuals. Simple normalization did not improve the relations. Clinically measured isometric muscle strength and muscle weakness have only moderate strengths for establishing a treatment protocol and for predicting performance during walking in neurologically intact individuals.Publication Metadata only Drug/nondrug classification with consensual self-organising map and self-organising global ranking algorithms(2008) Pehlivanlı, Ayça C.; Ersoy, Okan K.; ibrikçi, TurgayIn this paper, a special consensual approach is discussed for separating the druglike compounds from the non-druglike compounds. It involves a group decision to produce a consensus of multiple classification results obtained with a single classification algorithm. The individual results are obtained with either the Self Organising Global Ranking (SOGR) or Self Organising Map (SOM). The main difference between the proposed algorithm and SOM is the neighbourhood concept. The constructed consensual model has a preprocessing unit which consists of transformation of input patterns by random matrices and median filtering to generate independent errors for a single type of classifier, and a postprocessing unit for consensus. The confirmed drugs were classified with a consensual accuracy of 90.63% while nondrugs resulted in 80.44% accuracy. The SOGR results were better than the SOM algorithm results.Publication Open Access The Effect of Position on Feeding Performance in Infants With Cleft Lip and Palate: Quasiexperimental Study(Wiley, 2024) ERDOST, ŞERİFE KARTAL; Gözen, DuyguPurpose: This single-group, quasiexperimental study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding position on the physiological parameters and feeding performance of term-born infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP) in the preoperative period. Methods: The study sample consisted of 45 infants aged 0-6 months with CLP followed up preoperatively in our outpatient clinic between January 2021 and 2022. Infants who were being fed with a specialty bottle for babies with CLP and whose families consented to participate in the study were included. After 2 h of fasting, the infants were fed in the elevated supine (ESU) position for the first meal, then in the elevated side-lying (ESL) position for the second meal after another 2 h of fasting. The infants' heart rate and oxygen saturation values before, during, and after each feed and indicators of feeding performance were compared between the positions. Results: There was no significant difference between the positions in terms of heart rate and oxygen saturation before, during, or after feeding (p > .05). There was no statistically significant difference in measures of feeding performance according to the infants' feeding position (p > .05). Conclusion: According to the findings obtained in this study, infants with CLP showed no statistically significant differences in heart rate, oxygen saturation, or feeding performance when fed in the ESL and ESU positions. Practice Implications: However, despite the lack of statistical significance, both physiological values and feeding performance tended to be better when the infants were fed in the ESL position, nurses can practice ESL position according to the infant's opposite direction of the side of the cleft lip or palate.Publication Open Access Effectiveness of Motion Graphic-Based Narrative Therapy With a Cognitive-Behavioral Approach in Reducing Fluoride Varnish Therapy Anxiety for Six-Year-Old Children(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2023) SHABANI, SEVİL MOMENİ; Darabi, Fatemeh; Azimi, Ahad; Shabani, MasoudBACKGROUND: Fluoride varnish therapy (FVT) is a dental caries preventive service that its effectiveness has been well documented. A lot of children, especially the five-year-old and six-year-old ones, are suffering with anxiety during this service and do not readily allow it. The present study aimed to cast light on the effect of motion graphic-based narrative story with a cognitive-behavioral approach in reducing FVT anxiety among six-year-old children. MATERIALS AND METHODS:This study was an intervention trial type that was conducted in Ardabil city and among school students. Five children suffering from FVT anxiety were randomly selected for the intervention. First, Venham and Gaulin-Kremer's anxiety scale was completed for them. The motion graphic-based narrative therapy was implemented for six weeks. Session 1 was assigned to filling the questionnaire and collecting data. The motion graphic-based narrative therapy started from the second session. The anxiety scale was filled for the children every ten days for a total of four times. The results were analyzed by Blanchard and Schwarz's progress formula and control charts. The intervention sessions included gathering information, watching motion graphics, relaxation skills, watching the process of performing fluoride varnish therapy, teaching the advantages of fluoride varnish therapy, and in the last session performing fluoride varnish therapy with the technique of attention diversion while watching motion graphics. RESULTS: The motion graphic-based narrative therapy by the cognitive-behavioral approach proved effective in reducing anxiety. At the end of the intervention sessions, the level of anxiety decreased from 8 to 2.2 and the statistical control chart of the process shows that the intervention process is stable and the stability in order to reduce anxiety and the results are within the control limits. CONCLUSION: The results show that motion graphic-based narrative therapy can be a psychotherapy method for reducing the symptoms of dental anxiety among children.Publication Metadata only Evaluation of the effects of neural therapy in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia(2019) Terzi, Rabia; Başaran, Aynur; Tolu, Sena; Küçüksaraç, Seher; ALTINBİLEK, TURGAYObjectives: This study aims to compare the effects of neural therapy and exercise on pain, quality of life, depression, anxiety, and functioning status in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Patients and methods: This multi-center study included a total of 72 patients (60 females, 12 males; mean age: 39.2 +/- 9.5 years; range, 22 to 53 years) who were diagnosed with FMS according to the 1990 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria between January 2015 and June 2015. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: the first group (n=30) received an exercise program (strengthening, stretching, relaxation, and aerobic exercises, three days a week), and the second group (n=42) received a total of six sessions of neural therapy as one session a week in addition to the same exercise program. Pain severity was assessed with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), emotional state with the Beck Depression Scale (BDS) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), quality of life with Short Form-36 (SF-36), and functioning status with the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). The patients were evaluated at the end of treatment (week 6) and one month after the end of treatment. Results: The mean disease duration was 34.3 +/- 9.3 months, the mean VAS score was 7.3 +/- 2.2, and the mean FIQ score was 58.4 +/- 13.2. There were significant improvements in the VAS, FIQ, SF-36, BDS, and BAI scores after the treatment in both groups (p<0.05). Post-treatment BDS and VAS scores were significantly lower in the neural therapy group (p=0.038; p=0.049; p<0.05). There was no significant difference in any parameter one month after the treatment between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: When neural therapy is combined with exercise in FMS patients, it may be advantageous in terms of pain and depression, compared to exercise alone.Publication Open Access How is the brain working? Although the number of papers related to brain oscillations rapidly increases, it is important to indicate the common principles governing the functioning of brain oscillations in the brain and body. Research scientists need a global view on the types of analysis, applications and existing oscillations. Further, scientists dealing with brain oscillations must have some knowledge from theoretical physics, system theory, and also general philosophy. The neuroscientists working on brain oscillations can mentally integrate several papers in the present report, and try to discover new avenues to augment knowledge on brain functions.
